What is Linux From Scratch? Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides step-by-step instructions to build your own Linux system completely from source.
Why would I want an LFS system? Many people wonder why they should go through the tedious building of a Linux system from scratch when they can download a Linux distribution exists. However, there are several advantages.
Consider the following:
- LFS teaches people how a Linux system works internally The compilation of LFS teaches us so much, from how things work together and depend on each dalll'altro. And most importantly, how to customize it to your taste and needs.
- Building LFS produces a very compact Linux system When you install a distribution, a variety of programs usually end up in oblivion user. It is not difficult to get an LFS system installed under 100 MB. LFS can be developed for embedded systems. Is it possible to develop a system just enough to run an Apache server on which the space is about 8 MB. This is a test of strength of the system. With a distribution downloaded from the network, we will never have this kind of option.
- LFS is extremely flexible LFS can be likened to a home run ended in a workmanlike manner. LFS will give you the skeleton of a house, but it's up to you to install plumbing, electrical outlets, kitchen, bathroom, wallpaper, and so on. It has the ability to transform into any type of system to suit your needs.
- LFS offers you added safety You can build the entire system from source, with its security patches to be applied. We should not wait for someone else to provide a new binary package that (hopefully) fixes a security hole.
Now that we understand the benefits, I propose a set of reference links that may be helpful to the case: | LFS Home | LFS News | Download | Support | Mailing Lists | Wiki | Website mirror | Site map |
